Bulk Cement Prices in Kenya — Tanker vs Bags

For large pours, a pneumatic tanker can cut your per-tonne cost by 18–25%. Here is how to calculate the break-even point for your project.

Bulk Cement Prices in Kenya — Tanker vs Bags

The choice between bulk tanker cement and bagged cement has major cost implications. For small projects, bags are more practical. For large pours (foundations, slabs, commercial work), tanker delivery typically saves money, reduces labor, and speeds up the pour. Here is how to decide.

Bagged Cement — Pricing & Labor

Current price: KSh 780–800 per 50kg bag (general purpose). To get 60 tonnes, you need 1,200 bags. At KSh 800 per bag, that's KSh 960,000. But you also need labor to offload, stack, and move bags to the mixer. On-site offloading typically costs KSh 20–30 per bag (depending on site access), adding KSh 24,000–36,000. Total per-tonne cost: approximately KSh 16,000–16,300.

Bulk Tanker Cement — Pricing & Logistics

Pneumatic tanker rate: KSh 8,500–9,200 per tonne (all-in, including delivery and offloading). For 60 tonnes: KSh 510,000–552,000. The tanker pulls up to your concrete mixer, the pump operator blows cement directly into the hopper, and you're done in 2–3 hours. No labor needed beyond the pump operator (KSh 3,000–5,000). Total per-tonne cost: KSh 8,800–9,400. Savings: KSh 6,200–7,500 per tonne, or 38–45% cheaper.

The Break-Even Point

Tanker delivery has fixed costs (truck hire, pump operator). For small quantities (under 30 tonnes), the per-tonne cost advantage disappears. For 60 tonnes and above, tanker always wins on cost. The sweet spot: 40+ tonnes. Below 40 tonnes, bagged cement is more economical unless you can split a tanker load with another contractor.

Quality & Consistency

Both bagged and tanker cement come from the same manufacturers and meet KEBS standards. The difference is handling: loose cement in a tanker has fewer moisture ingress risks than bagged cement stored on-site. If your project has extended timelines, tanker cement (delivered just before the pour) is safer.

When to Choose Bagged

  • Small projects (under 10 tonnes).
  • Phased pours over multiple weeks.
  • Tight site access (no room for a 10m pneumatic pump).
  • Projects in remote areas where tanker logistics are complicated.

When to Choose Tanker

  • Large pours: 40+ tonnes in a single day.
  • Tight schedules: tanker delivery is faster and reduces on-site delays.
  • Budget pressure: 38–45% savings on material cost is significant.
  • Urban construction: most Nairobi projects have adequate site access for tankers.
Pro tip: Call Safeworld at least 3 days before your planned pour. We'll assess your site and confirm tanker feasibility, then lock in pricing. Tanker routes are planned 2–3 days in advance.
